SpaceBass Podcast - Patrick Forge Naha City Block Party

Last year we were very fortunate to have the legendary Patrick Forge DJ at one of our parties, and as a leaving present he left us this mix! Here's some words from the man himself:

Greetings from the sub-tropical outpost of the Nippon motherland! Liam from Space Bass asked me to knock up a little funk and boogie blend; and that’s what I’ve put together, well almost ! Mixed live and raw from original vinyl on my Bozak rotary without the benefits (?) of EQ and FX, this is a one-time mix, unplanned with all the joy and serendipity of spontaneous selection. So there’s the odd bump and flam along the way.

Much as my heart belongs to jazz, I grew up dancing to music like this, which is why it’s been my pleasure to have been doing the Inspiration Information sessions for the last dozen years or so. The tunes range from the electro tinged Afrobeat of African Connexion and King Sunny Ade, through Larry Levan’s dub of Smokey to straight up boogie classics from Fresh Band and Pleasure, and not forgetting the Italian connection from Firefly the mighty Change ( Paradise is one of many written and arranged by the awesome team of producer Mauro Malavasi and bassist Davide Romani, BB+Q’s Starlette being another). There’s proto-house from Serious Intention, a little Jamaican funk from Richard Ace, and a wonderfully warped mélange of slap bass and heavy claps to start things rolling with The Pied Piper of Funkingham, dropping the tempo at the end for a fairly obscure 12’ only release from Lesette Wilson. Hope you enjoy!

Naha City Block Party

Spinning between the smoothness of Rodney Franklin's 'Felix Leo' and Chaka Khan, to Mark E's finest and then onto my re-edit of Mr Bumpman. Get's a bit detroit in there for a bit, then ends a bit jazzy. You know the steez. Enjoy

Rodney Franklin - "Felix Leo"

Chaka Khan - "Night Moves"

Mark E - "Codsall Juniors" ------> into ------> "Get Yourself Together"

Theo Parrish - "Root Beer Float"

Confunkshun - "Indian Summer"

Sherrick - "Call Me"

Jo Boyer - "Isabelle & The Rain"

LCD Soundsystem - "4533 (Riley Rienhold remix)"

Omar S - "Flying Gorgars" ------> into ------> "Blown Valvetrane" (bad tune btw)

Jackey Beavers - "Mr Bumpman (liamski re-edit)"

Cloud One - "Spaced Out"

Makam - "The Hague Soul"

Moodymann - "Midnights"

Cookie - "Fun Freaks"

Dayo has delved deeper than ever to bring us a superb jazz mix that's perfect listening on a late Summer afternoon. The previous two installments have nearly caused my podcast to crash, such was their popularity... I'd better stick another 50p in the meter and up my bandwidth for this one! :)

The tracklist - and typically informative comment - can be found over on www.brownswood.co.uk
